Double page spread

Initially, when working on my project i wasnt completely sure what i wanted to do. However i narrowed my scope down and i now know i want to do a pet magazine, so in this weeks assignment the goal is to find and analyze some double page spreads of other pet magazine to help with the development of my own eventually.

Example 1:

This magazine's double page spread is varying, however i chose this specific one due to the way they used their pictures. Specifically on the second page, where the use of a large picture as the background is INCREDIBLY effective for appealing to readers emotion and is easy to see due to it being such a large picture and it being the background, under a piece of bold text which leads the reader on even more and uses "..." to maximize the hook on the reader by keeping them curious and making them want to read more. Moreover, the left side is more simplistic and text-reliant which is okay, however i dont know if a pet magazine of MY kind would need so many subheadings and pieces of text with a lack of pictures. The page only has 1 picture on the top which is okay, but i personally dont find this appealing to readers as the large separation from the picture to text makes the reader overwhelmed with words to read, especially considering the target audience of a pet magazine's group of people.

Example 2:

This double page spread also utilizes the background to incorporate a picture which relates to the text on the page. This adds a sense of cuteness with the picture being the cat, and the readers of pet magazines love pictures of cute pets, so this can serve as a way to capture the readers attention and maintain their interest. However, the second page uses multiple mid-sized pictures with 1-2 paragraphs of information with a single subheading for each one. I love this idea and it makes the page look very organized but at the same time eye-catching.

Example 3:

This magazine utilizes a-lot more text than i would ever use. The over use of the text makes the readers somewhat overwhelmed and will cause waning attention, especially with how the attention span of people are nowadays this can present problems.

Genre

1.  My genre of choice for my personal magazine will be a nature magazine, specifically targeting animals and the pets we have at home. For the animals im going to include, it would most likely include my beta fishes, bearded dragon named Raggy, my cat named Minnie and my dog Kona, however this will NOT BE SPECIFICALLY ABOUT MY PERSONAL ANIMALS!

2. The conventions of my magazine will follow the typical model, including an enlarged picture of my cat looking very cute on the cover to attract the vast majority of people who cant skip past cute cats, and I will include the topics of how to feed each of these animals, how someone could play/interact with them and more about their natural habits and going partially in-depth about how suitable each of these animals are for domestication and including some fun facts throughout the magazine in the sidebars.

3. For my production techniques, the layout of my magazine will first have to begin in the cover. This is the part that largly determines how many people consume your product, so i will ensure I have the cutest picture of my cat looking adorable, paired with cute colors that match the vibe of my cat which could be white and black for the neat text and maybe pink background which kinda fits Minnie's vibe.  Throughout the different pages, each page will be dedicated to a certain animal and how they are, each following the same format and similar fonts. To change things out, i will add small images of certain things that regard that specific pet.

4. Usually this genre is marketed by first considering the target audience: This can range from things like cat-lovers, exotic pet enthusiasts, and even horse owners! They target these audiences by including large pictures of these animals as the cover of the magazine to catch their attention, reeling them in further by also including small text on the cover hinting about whats inside the magazine. Next, we need to consider marketing techniques of this genre, which include advertising on popular social medias, which can often reach out to certain demographics and audiences based on what they like, making advertising much easier. Although rare, some may use the appeal to emotion by showing an animal in distress, sad/crying, or extremely happy to promote interaction and draw more attention.

5. Sample #1:

This example fits my genre perfectly, and follows each convention, conventionally. The focal point of this cover is a cute dog which happens to be a notorious breed of dog known for being cute, paired with the apparent large smile the dog is giving us with its tongue out which screams positivity and love. The title of the magazine "Best Friends" tells us that the creator is referring to dogs as a best friend which makes us create a sort of positive relationship between human and dogs. We also get a shallow focus shot of the dog which makes the adorable pet even more irresistible to look at.

Sample #2

This sample follows the same common conventions, such as the overwhelmingly cute animal as the biggest thing on the cover, making an adorable face. This paired with the text "Cats Rule, Dogs Drool" which further promotes cats as the best pet presumably which helps consumers know what this magazine will include. The subtext uses attention grabbing words such as "DONT-MISS PICS" which is another effective way to utilize text on the cover of a magazine.

8. Representation
Obviously, in pet magazines the main representative is a pet which usually looks insanely adorable and are usually under the "Perfect breeds" and "Family Pets" stereotypes. In majority of these magazines, you will always find yourself falling in love with the pets, as they are shown to be perfectly cute and capable of being a humans bestfriend. These are the main characters which draw in the cat-lovers or dog lovers(typically) so the creators often ensure they are looking as cute as possible.
